# 13 Minutes to Shine: A Century of Care, A Lifetime of Community

by [St. Cloud Shines](https://blog.stcloudshines.com/blog/author/st-cloud-shines) | Nov 3, 2026, 8:01:00 AM

There's something magical about walking through a building that's been standing for nearly 100 years. Every brick, every hallway, every corner holds a story — and for Brendon, the archivist at St. Cloud Hospital, these stories are more than just history. They're a window into the heart of a community.

A Childhood Love Affair with History

Before Brendon became an archivist — someone who collects, organizes, preserves, and shares historical information — he was just a kid obsessed with the past. By age six, he'd memorized every U.S. president and set out to visit their graves. Yes, seriously. While most children were playing outside, Brendon was interviewing grandparents and great-grandparents, tape recorder in hand, hungry to understand the stories that shaped his world. He's always loved history, and it shows.

Today, that passion has found its home at [CentraCare](https://www.centracare.com/), where he serves as the organization's archivist, a role that feels custom-made for someone who grew up in Greater St. Cloud and chose to raise his own family here.

Greater St. Cloud: 100+ Years of Foundation

From the banks of the Mississippi River, St. Cloud Hospital rises as a testament to a century of growth. What began as a vision nearly 100 years ago has evolved into something the original builders could barely have imagined. But here's what's remarkable: even with all the modern additions and expansions, the original footprint remains, a reminder of humble beginnings in service of community healing.

Walk through the hospital today, and you'll see the old meeting the new. Massive parking ramps now stand where people once hitched their horses and wagons. Brendon sees something deeper than architectural evolution; he sees a reflection of how healthcare, and the community itself, has grown and adapted over a century.

The Cornerstone That Holds Everything

At the heart of St. Cloud Hospital stands a chapel. And at the heart of that chapel stands the original cornerstone, a physical reminder that this institution was built on more than medicine. It was built on faith, care, and a spiritual commitment to healing the whole person.

[The Sisters of the Order of St. Benedict](https://sbm.osb.org/)founded this hospital with a vision that healthcare was inseparable from spiritual care. They were Roman Catholic, yes, but their mission was universal: to care for everyone who came through their doors. And they made sure that the chapel, that spiritual center, remained the true heart of the hospital, even as the building grew around it.

Nearly 100 years later, that chapel still stands largely unchanged, a testament to what matters most.

Sister Julieta Happe: The Visionary Who Built It All

If there's one person whose name deserves to be remembered alongside the founding of modern healthcare in Greater St. Cloud, it's Sister Julieta Happe. She was in the first graduating class of the hospital's School of Nursing. She nursed the community through the devastating 1918 flu pandemic. And when the time came to expand and formalize the hospital, she became its first administrator and the driving force behind its growth.

But here's the part that might give you chills: In the year before the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began, the Sisters secured a $2 million loan to build St. Cloud Hospital. People thought they were building too big. Too expensive. How could they possibly fill such a massive facility? Wrong. The hospital didn't grow too large … it grew exactly as the community needed it to.

What's even more remarkable is Sister Julieta herself. She lived to be 95 and embodied a servant spirit that defined her entire life. After stepping back from administration, she returned to surgical nursing because that's where the hospital needed her. When she finally retired, she volunteered in the hospital laundry, again, because that's where the greatest need was. That's the DNA of healthcare in this community: going where you're needed most, not where it's easiest.

The $1 Gift That Changed Everything

Here's a moment in Centricare's history that defies logic — but makes perfect sense when you understand the values at work. After nearly 40 years of owning, operating, and risking everything to run St. Cloud Hospital, the Sisters made a decision: they were going to gift the hospital to the community. The price? *One dollar.*

Think about that math for a moment. A $2 million loan. Decades of sacrifice, innovation, and tireless work. And then... a gift of $1. "There's no math that makes sense of it," Brendon admits. "It's not a rational decision."

But it was a visionary one. Because when healthcare systems began consolidating and specializing across Minnesota, St. Cloud didn't have to start from scratch. The Sisters' gift gave the community a foundation strong enough to build on, partner with larger healthcare systems, and offer specialized services that smaller communities might never have access to. Today, people across the region can receive care close to home because of that one-dollar gift made decades ago.

X-Ray Tubes and the Birth of Modern Diagnostics

Among Brendon's favorite archival treasures is something most people would overlook: X-ray tubes from the mid-1920s. At that time, X-ray technology was new, almost suspiciously so. Many in the medical establishment thought it was more hocus pocus than science. But a radiologist named Dr. Kern believed in its potential so much that he bought the first X-ray machine with his own money and convinced the Sisters it was worth the investment.

Eight of those original X-ray tubes still exist in the hospital's collection. But what makes them truly remarkable isn't their age; it's what they represent. Those tubes were the beginning of diagnostic imaging. They evolved into CT scans, MRI machines, PET scans, and an entirely new world of medical technology. The hospital has graduated hundreds of diagnostic imaging professionals over the past 65-70 years.

One artifact. An enormous legacy.

How Proximity to the Twin Cities Built an Entrepreneurial Spirit in Central Minnesota

Greater St. Cloud sits in a unique sweet spot: close enough to the Twin Cities to benefit from proximity, but far enough away that the community had to solve problems on its own.

That necessity bred innovation. When a nursing shortage hit, the Sisters didn't wait for solutions from elsewhere — they started a nursing school. Suddenly, women who might have become farm wives had the opportunity to build careers, contribute to their communities, and support their families in ways they might never have imagined.

That spirit of innovation and self-reliance? It's woven into the DNA of this region. It continues today, adapting to whatever the community needs.

The Personal Side: Why Healthcare Matters

For all his historical knowledge, Brendon's deepest appreciation for healthcare comes from personal experience. His brother once spent nine months in the hospital, and watching the dedicated caregivers who tended to him transformed how Brendon sees the profession.

"I really have a new appreciation for how much people give of themselves to care for others," he reflects. "I admire people who choose direct caregiving as a career. It's really important."

The community is fortunate, he notes, to have people who've grown up here and chosen healthcare as their calling, as well as those who've moved here specifically to be part of something special. Healthcare isn't just an industry in Greater St. Cloud, it's a vital community resource powered by people who genuinely care.

Greater St. Cloud: Build Your Family Here

When asked what advice he'd give about Greater St. Cloud, Brendon's answer is immediate: "Build your family here." His three children grew up in this community, and he's watched them benefit from something rare — the best of both worlds. They've experienced the warmth and connection of a small town while having access to the resources and opportunities of a larger city. They've learned to love the outdoors, to value community, and to see themselves as part of something bigger than themselves.

It's the kind of place where a century-old hospital still stands as a symbol of service. Where innovation is born from necessity. Where a dollar gift carries the weight of generations of sacrifice. And where a young boy who memorized all the presidents can grow up to tell the stories that matter most.

That's Greater St. Cloud. That's the story Brendon helps preserve; not just in archives, but in the hearts of the people who call this place home.
