Meet Nisha Thapa

Originally from Nepal, Nisha moved to St. Cloud just before the COVID-19 pandemic in pursuit of higher education. Since assimilating herself into our community, she has grown a deep love for Greater St. Cloud and all we have to offer.

“I grew up in a small place that is very different from Central Minnesota in every aspect that you can think of. Even though it’s very far away, you would be amazed how many students back in my home country know of St. Cloud – specifically St. Cloud State University. Like most international students, I chose St. Cloud because a few people that I know completed their education here and are now living and working in Minnesota. But now that I’ve been here for a few years, I’ve had the chance to explore and find other reasons that keep me in St. Cloud and make me an advocate for this place.”

“The most impressive part of St. Cloud that I mention to everyone I talk with is the diversity here. I have made friends from over 10+ countries so far, have had the chance to try new food, and experience new things. As someone who values the power of togetherness, I love how this community has offered me the chance to gather and connect with locals. Every year, some of the families here in Central Minnesota host dinner or fun activities around Thanksgiving and Christmas – or really for any celebrations. My decision to live in St. Cloud alone has changed so many things in my life; SCSU really plays a vital role in shaping my experiences.”

“Because I am a full-time student, I spend most of my time in class or doing coursework, but going out for a walk near George Lake, hanging out with friends on the Beaver Island Trail, or going on a hike at Quarry Park is how I love to spend my free time. The climate is so much different than in Nepal, but I love being outside here!”

“Along with being outside, I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in Filsan Talent Parents, an amazing team that shares the power of diversity, equity, and inclusion around St. Cloud. I’ve also been involved in Global Friends, which helps connect international students with Minnesotans so that we could share our culture and values, and come together as a community. I’ve also served as a Donor Ambassador for the American Red Cross Society as a volunteer. There are tons of opportunities available for anyone to go out and explore, build a relationship with this community, and most importantly – learn about other cultures. I think getting these opportunities, and meeting amazing people here have helped me grow.”

“This community is so enthusiastic and naturally encouraging. When I describe St. Cloud, I tell others this is a diverse community, a great place to live, and an area full of opportunities. Even though the weather is cold, the people are warm and welcoming. There are so many times I have thought to myself, St. Cloud is really a nice place … or as everyone else says “Minnesota Nice”. I love being in St. Cloud because I literally found another home far away from where I grew up. I’m so happy with my decision to pursue my education in Greater St. Cloud.”
